I’m always getting floods of emails telling me that a username I’ve never heard of just wrote an article or a comment about something I don’t give a horse’s back end about. Why are social networking websites like Facebook and Twitter always pulling this kind of thing?

I miss the days when the internet was still everywhere but not defined by selfies with deplorably messy rooms in the background, and hashtags around everything.

Now don’t get me wrong, “hashtag activism” can sometimes be great and it has certainly raised awareness on many issues, like rape & sexual abuse awareness, LGBT rights, and police brutality cases. But we could be accomplishing all that without the particularly asinine things social media comes with… like telling each other everything about our lives when nobody else cares as much as we do.
