Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan has responded to the failed coup, initiated and quashed last week in a manner that suggests he’s up to quite a bit more than simply neutralizing an immediate threat to the regime’s rule: he’s orchestrating a power grab resembling that practiced in Pinochet’s Chile or in Argentina during the Dirty War.
Now keep in mind this is not the first time the Justice and Development Party (AKP), Turkey’s ruling party, has found itself on the fine line between self preservation and intrusion on civil society. Just a few months ago the high courts in the country overturned a number of convictions sought in a move by Erdogan to subdue what the government alleged to be a widespread threat to overthrow it.
