It’s a simple statement of fact that the 2016 election was an unusual ordeal for American unity. Fights broke out, friendships were severed, even marriages thrown in troubled waters over which presidential contender was more fit to take the torch from Obama. Since the end of the election, pundits and others, from both the right and the left have called for the country to heal from its divisions (something that will take a lot more time, unfortunately, than any op-ed would suggest). The calls we’ve needed, both before and after the election are for more civility and for people to better listen to each other.
Fair enough! Civility is good, unity is good. They are what keep the politically engaged from discussing important issues without the discourse dissolving into riots such as those seen in present day Venezuela or Turkey. All things equal, a civil society is invariably a prosperous…
